What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is a holistic and multidimensional approach to pain relief and healing. It is based on the recognition that the underlying cause or source of many musculoskeletal, neurological, neuromuscular and other health or pain problems that could be found in the soft tissue or fascia.
Fascia is a specific type of connective tissue that forms a three dimensional web surrounding every tissue in the body. Fascia is the body organizer embracing all nerves, bones, arteries, veins, and muscles. Therefore fascial dysfunction can affect every structure, muscle, nerve, and organ in the body.
Bowen Therapy, through specific soft tissue or fascial release and integration techniques, (‘moves’) stimulate (‘moves’) specific receptors that enable the body itself to correct dysfunctions and restore homeostasis (balance) on a holistic level.
What does the Bowen Technique involve?
A Bowen Therapy session consist of a series of precise sequenced moves on muscles and tissues that are gentle and lightly performed which makes it suitable for small children and, the elderly, and can also be carried out through light clothing.
These moves prompt the body to redress physical imbalances by delivering signals to the nervous system that initiate the release of muscle tension, blood, and lymphatic circulation and generally induces a feeling of relaxation and well being – the first step in feeling better.
The body normally responds quickly, sometimes profoundly, making it a clinically and cost effective treatment. Usually 3 or 4 treatments are required to bring about long term relief. However, many people experience relief after just one treatment.
What can I expect during a Bowen treatment session?
A Bowen Treatment session will usually last about half an hour. No oils are used, and the patient is usually fully clothed during the session.
The aim of the treatment is to establish a comprehensive profile of the overall health of the patient, as well as addressing the patient’s specific complaint, so the first consultation will include a discussion of the individual’s lifestyle, sleeping patterns, medical history, stress levels, and history of any injuries.
During treatment, pauses of several minutes punctuate each series of ‘moves’. These short breaks are important to allow the body to absorb the effects of the gentle manipulations. At this pace, the body is given time to effect the subtle adjustments which will help to initiate the healing process.
Unlike most other therapies, it is the patient’s body that takes the initiative in healing, not the therapist. During and after treatment a patient may experience deep relaxation, a feeling that they can retain for days.
Ideally treatments should be one week apart. However, when treating certain conditions – such as recurring sports injuries, or complaints during pregnancy, when changes in the body occur frequently – the treatments may be carried out at shorter intervals.
Usually two or three treatments are required to bring about long term relief. However, many people experience relief after just one treatment, either immediately after the session, or within a matter of days.
